Dryer Vent Cleaning FAQs
Why do dryer vents need to be cleaned?
Cleaning your dryer vent maintains the energy efficiency and lifespan of your dryer, reduces allergens in your home, and greatly reduces the chance of a dryer vent fire.
When should dryer vents be cleaned?
The typical household should clean their dryer vent every 2-3 years. Commercial dryer vents should be cleaned annually.
In all cases, dryer vents should be cleaned before they show signs of lint accumulation in the vent. The lint trap should be cleaned after each load.
Your dryer vent needs to be cleaned if: it takes more than one cycle to dry your clothes, the outside surface of the dryer gets hot, you notice less lint in the trap, or you find more lint on your clothes than usual.
How are dryer vents cleaned?
Whenever possible, Advanpro cleans dryer vents from the outside, which doesn’t require indoor access or disconnecting the dryer.
To perform cleaning on rooftop dryer vents, the roof must be free of snow or ice so we can safely access the vent.
Dryer vent cleaning typically takes 30 to 60 minutes.
What causes dryer vent fires?
As clothes dryers are used, small amounts of lint pass through the dryer’s lint trap and collect inside the exhaust vent. As more trapped lint accumulates, the vent becomes blocked and the temperature rises — greatly increasing the risk of dryer overheating, ignition, and fire.
The following factors also increase the risk of dryer vent fires:
- accordion-style plastic hoses (replace with a metal version)
- overloading the dryer with clothes
- running the dryer while away from home
- mesh screens (use purpose-built bird-blockers or exhaust louvres)
